Biography

Sidney O. Edwards, 58, of Niskayuna, NY passed away at his home Tuesday morning July 7, 2009 after a short illness.
Born on November 10, 1950 in Henderson, NC he was the son of Ruth Thompson Edwards and the late Sidney Edwards. Sidney moved to the Schenectady area with his family in his high school years. He was a graduate of Linton High School in Schenectady.
Sidney played basketball for Linton High School were he was an all American star athlete for his team. After high school he went on to graduate from and play basketball for the University of Huston, Texas. He then went on to play semi pro basketball for several years in Germany until later joining the team of the Harlem Glob Trotters where he played for 3 years. In 2007 Sidney was recognized for his basketball talent by naming him to the Schenectady Area Basketball Hall of Fame and last year was recognized as one of the top 50 players from the capital district.
Sidney also worked for over the past 20 years as an independent over the road truck driver and helped his sisters establish a trucking business the E.S.E. Trucking Co. of Niskayuna.
Survivors include his mother, Ruth Edwards of Niskayuna; 2 sisters, Sylvia (Alvin) Smith of Schenectady and B. Laverne Edwards of Niskayuna; his wife, Lisa Anderson Edwards; step children, Greg and Tiffany Thompson; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at the Friendship Baptist Church, 409 Union St., Schenectady. Burial will take place in Park View Cemetery, Schenectady.
