Bertha (nee: Hummer) Neal, 83, of Scotia, passed away at home on Saturday evening, March 13, 2010 following a long illness.
Born in Schenectady on June 22, 1926, she was the daughter of the late John and Ella Rose (nee: Gifford) Hummer. She was a life long area resident and attended Mont Pleasant High School. She was a member of First Dutch Reformed Church of West Glenville, where she also taught Sunday school.
Bertha enjoyed knitting and creating photo albums with family memorabilia. She was a proud NY Yankee fan and could often be found doing puzzles with her dear friends at Holy Rood. She was a devoted and loving mother and was a beloved caregiver to many children.
Married on April 9, 1944, Bertha was predeceased in 1983 by her husband, Virgil William Neal. She was also predeceased by a daughter, Kathy Lois Pelkey; her sister, Grace Decker and 2 brothers, James and Bernard Hummer.
She is survived by her children, Shirley Ann (Richard S.) Portnoy of Boca Raton, FL, Diane Marie (Patsy A.) Ruzzo of Tampa, FL, Mary Ellen (Sean) Connors of Scotia and Mark Wayne (Tomlynn) Neal of Albany; 11 grandchildren, Karen (John) Bracchi, Lisa Nolf, Brian (Lynn) Ruzzo, Brett (Renee) Ruzzo, and Brad (Tandis) Ruzzo, Melissa Pelkey and Robert (Pamela) Pelkey, Stacey Connors, and Steven, Heather and Danielle Neal; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State St., Schenectady followed by interment at Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery, Colonie. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday evening from 6 until 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
