Biography

Robert H. Madigan, 92, of Middle Grove, NY, passed away on Monday, March 1, 2010, at Saratoga Hospital. Born in Schenectady on March 22, 1917, he was the son of the late Henry and Zada (nee: Lauder) Madigan. A lifelong area resident, he was a graduate of Mont Pleasant High School and has been living in Middle Grove for the past 20 years. During WWII, Robert served as a sergeant for the U.S. Marine Corps in the Pacific Theatre. He was a communicant of St. Luke's Roman Catholic Church in Schenectady. He worked for the Schenectady Fire Department for over 30 years, retiring as Deputy Chief. During his career as a fireman, he also worked as a butcher for the A & P Market in Wood-lawn area of Schenectady. After his retirement, he served as a volunteer with Lake Desolation Fire Dept. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1092 in Schenectady. Robert was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Naomi Killion Madigan, whom he married on August 16, 1941. She passed away on December 16, 1990. He was also predeceased by two sisters, Althea Wilson and Dorothy Booth and one brother, Vincent Madigan. Survivors include a son, Paul M. (Margaret) Madigan of Ballston Lake; a daughter, Margaret (Arnold) Bushman of Middle Grove; a brother, Father Henry Madigan of Rensselaer; a sister, Leah Hill of Schenectady; seven grandchildren, Linda (Matthew) Ferry, Kimberly (Michael) White, Sharon (Craig) Lango, Paul Madigan, Jr., Matthew (Lauren Tarsio) Madigan, Christine (Jon) Fass and Daniel Madigan; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be held on Friday at 10 a.m. at Griswold Funeral Home, 1867 State St., Schenectady, followed by interment in Most Holy Redeemer Cemetery, Niskayuna. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 5 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home, where all active and retired members of the Schenectady Fire Department are asked to gather at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital , 501 St. Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
