Biography
O'Brien, Kenneth POESTENKILL Kenneth O'Brien, 79, of Poestenkill passed away peacefully at his home early Sunday morning, January 31, 2010. Born in Brooklyn on September 29, 1930, he was the son of the late James and Mildred (nee: Masten) O'Brien. He was raised and educated in the New York City School system until he enlisted in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. Following his military service, he and his family moved to the local area where he met and married his wife, Beatrice (nee: Malik) O'Brien. He was a communicant of St. Henry's Church in Averill Park for over 50 years. He was employed by Niagara Mohawk as a field supervisor in the gas department with over 40 years of service until his retirement in 1992. He was a member of the VFW Post #7466, Poestenkill, American Legion Post #1489, Wynantskill, Poestenkill Fire House, Fuller Road Fire House, Elks BPO Lodge #2556, Brunswick and the Loyal Order of Moose, Lodge #2117, Palmetto, Fla. Kenneth was proud of his Irish heritage and had many interests that include traveling, singing, karaoke, biking and walking. He will be remembered by his family as a man who devoted his life to loving and caring for his family and many dear friends. Married on September 6, 1953, Kenneth was predeceased on June 27, 2002 by his wife, Beatrice O'Brien. In addition to his parents and wife, he was also predeceased by his brother, John O'Brien and two sisters, Dolores Colvin and Rosemary Hoffman. Kenneth is survived by his children, Renee (Robert) Phaneuf of Averill Park, Rita (Bruce) Lawrence of Poestenkill, Ruth (Mike Taylor) O'Brien of Troy, Thomas (Karen) O'Brien of West Sand Lake, Rhonda (Rick Watson) Foland of East Poestenkill, Timothy O'Brien of Troy and Roxanne (George) Wilkins of East Poestenkill; his sister, Madalyn Hankle of Hoags Corners; 14 loving grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and cousins and son-in-law, Bill Foland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Henry's Church, 17 Crystal Lake Rd., Averill Park. Interment will follow in St. Henry's Cemetery, Averill Park. The family will receive relatives and friends on Tuesday evening from 4 to 7 at the church. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to American Cancer Society, 260 Osborne Rd., Loudonville, NY 12211 and Community Hospice of Rensselaer, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144. Arrangements are entrusted to Tebbutt Funeral Home, 633 Central Ave., Albany.
